When is the Self Assessment deadline?

Online Self Assessment returns for the tax year ending 5 April must be filed by 31 January the following year. Any tax owed must also be paid by 31 January. Paper returns are due by 31 October.

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme requiring businesses to keep digital records and submit information using compatible software. It already applies to VAT, and from April 2026 it applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, with lower thresholds following in later years.

When do I need to register for VAT?

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover goes over the VAT registration threshold (currently £90,000) in a rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to within the next 30 days.

What can I claim as a business expense?

Generally, costs incurred wholly and exclusively for your business can be claimed, such as stock, office costs, travel, professional fees and a proportion of home running costs if you work from home. We will make sure you claim everything you are entitled to.
